A BBC investigation has found that illegal teeth-whitening treatments that can destroy teeth and burn gums are being distributed openly – some of the treatment gels contain over 500 times the legal limit of bleaching agent and are also being sold on social media.
In the UK, treatments using teeth-whitening products containing more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide can only be carried out by dentists and other professionals registered with the General Dental Council – and cannot contain more than 6% hydrogen peroxide. Undercover BBC reporters sent illegal teeth-whitening products to a laboratory for testing which showed shocking levels of up to 53% hydrogen peroxide – which can cause considerable pain and long-term damage.
