With an impression of the area to be treated, customised inlays and onlays are created out of long-lasting materials such as metal or dental resin. They are bonded to the damaged tooth and are cemented into place. A local anaesthetic is administered during the procedure.
An inlay sits in the centre of your tooth and helps to fill up gaps. It is fitted in between the cusps (points) of your tooth and aids in preventing further decay.
For a fractured or damaged tooth, an onlay is placed on the exterior – over one or more of its cusps or casing the biting surface. The teeth that require this treatment are usually those at the back of your mouth, as they are more susceptible to cavities. Onlays help to reconstruct the shape of your tooth.
