What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment (endodontics) is a dental procedure used to treat infection at the centre of a tooth also known as the nerve or pulp.

The infection at the centre of a tooth (the root canal) is caused by bacteria that live in the mouth and invade the tooth. This can happen after:

  • Tooth decay;
  • Leaky fillings, and/or;
  • Damage to teeth as a result of a trauma (such as a fall or very progressed gum disease)

What are the steps when undergoing root cancel treatment?

Root canal therapy is done in following steps, and it takes between one and three sessions to complete.

1. Cleaning the root canal first with very small files.

2. Filling the root canal next with naturally occurring rubber like material.

3. Adding a crown or filling( if appropriate) to protect the tooth.

Treatment often takes only one appointment, but if there are curved, multi-canals, or large areas of infection, this could additional appointments.
